4 Technologies that Benefit the Grid & Enhance Building Energy Management
Read Time:4 Minute, 1 Second
Power grids are crucial in today's culture because they instantly provide enormous amounts of power for structures. There are no energy delivery technologies available today that can equal the size and speed of power networks. Power grids have a lot of benefits, but they also have technological constraints of their own. When the grid is unable to keep up with the usage, these restrictions may cause blackouts.
Power grids frequently run just partially full. This is mostly caused by changes in energy needs. For instance, because the majority of people are asleep and using less equipment around midnight, the electricity grids are only moderately burdened. However, during the summer, when buildings are using their air conditioning systems to the fullest, the electrical networks are stressed to the breaking point.   The four technologies that will help the electrical grid are listed below.   System Battery   There is a compelling reason why energy storage devices have recently become quite popular. Energy may be produced more cheaply than coal using renewable energy technologies and battery storage. Remember that for many years, coal has been the cheapest kind of energy.   Although renewable energy systems seem fantastic, our networks still do not have 100% renewable electricity.   When their respective inputs, solar panels and wind turbines, are available, renewable energy systems like this may produce electricity. The output of energy from solar panels and wind turbines decreases sharply when their sources are unavailable.   Fossil fuel energy systems, on the other hand, cost more and produce a lot more pollution. However, they have the ability to generate power at any moment.   Renewable energy systems can be paired with battery systems to get around this restriction. Simply said, when power output is higher, excess energy may be stored in battery systems. When the inputs of the renewable systems, such as sunshine and wind, are insufficient, this excess energy can be used.   The notion of a virtual power plant is also appealing. Multiple batteries in buildings are connected to form a virtual power plant. Virtual power plants can increase the grid's flexibility by properly balancing their power output and energy storage capacity. Tesla Chargers     Tesla Chargers The extra electricity produced by solar panels can be a concern in places with strong solar energy adoption, like California. Grid managers must therefore reduce the amount of electricity generated by conventional power plants. This may also cause the grid to become unstable or, in rare instances, experience blackouts. Commercial buildings with EV chargers provide three key advantages:
  • Charge the EVs that are plugged in with any extra electricity produced by the building's renewable energy systems.
  • transportation sector carbon reduction
  • Encourage the use of EVs because EV chargers are readily available
The solar energy generation peaks can be absorbed and used by EV chargers when renewable energy sources are coupled with battery systems in buildings. Plants for Chillers and Ice Storage During the summer, a number of buildings use their air conditioning systems to the maximum extent, straining the electrical supply. Electric companies are continually updating the power cables and transformers to keep up with demand. But raising the price of power allows for the recovery of the necessary investment. The chiller plants in a building can be set up to make ice when demand is low or when renewable energy sources supply extra electricity. Chillers can be stepped down during peak demand hours to lessen the burden on the grid. The ice in storage may be melted to provide the necessary air conditioning. The electricity consumption of several buildings may be decreased simultaneously by using this approach in district cooling systems. When melting ice, Chicago in the US employs this idea to lower demand by 200 MW. regulated loads Controlled loads are a pretty straightforward idea that can lower grid demand. Due to their variable operation schedules, some electrical devices can perform their job at any time of day. These devices receive a cheaper price because they are connected to a different power metre. The building owner can only use these electrical appliances when the grid is not overloaded, never during peak demand, in exchange for the lower tariff advantage. Pool heaters with controlled loads are a great choice since they may operate more affordably by using power off-peak hours. About the Author The founder and principal of NY Engineers is Michael Tobias, PE. He is the team leader of more than 50 MEP/FP engineers. Despite having its primary offices in New York City, New York Engineers has managed more than 1,000 engineering projects in the states of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Florida, Maryland, as well as Malaysia and Singapore. Michael views engineering as a tool to improve quality of life and is an advocate for green technologies and energy efficiency.
